The 5 o’clock club aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.
I originally planned this edition to be the Week 14 Wildcard Watch, but to paraphrase Samwell Tarley, the fire has gone out of the season, and now the watch is ended. Instead, I thought I’d print some seasonal information about an important charitable program for the local community.
The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation and the U.S. Marine Corps teamed up this month to benefit local children through the Toys for Tots collection and annual ‘Skins Santa Shoppe’ event.
Skins Santa Shoppe (Tuesday, Dec. 5)
Location: FedExField
Event Time: 10:15 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.
The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation hosted 200 elementary school children from Aiton and Savoy Elementary Schools (District of Columbia Public Schools), Ardmore and Hollywood Elementary Schools (Prince George’s County Public Schools) and Crestwood and Saratoga Elementary Schools (Fairfax County Public Schools) at the annual Skins Santa Shoppe event.
Redskins players who were scheduled to attend included Jonathan Allen, Zach Brown, Vernon Davis, Terrell McClain, Niles Paul, Ondre Pipkins, Brandon Scherff and Nick Sundberg*.
Upon arrival, students were served lunch by the Redskins celebrities in attendance. Following lunch, students experienced four fun, holiday activity stations. The stations included:
- Santa’s Workshop: The Redskins locker room will be transformed into Santa’s workshop, filled with presents and holiday cheer. Prior to the event, each student wrote letters to Santa Claus and the Redskins so that presents could be personalized for each child. Redskins celebrities, Marines and Santa Claus greeted children and helped them find their wrapped gift.
- Trim the Tree: Students decorated their Redskins Celebrity into a Christmas tree using all “tree trimming” items available, including making a tree topper. Trees (aka Redskins Players) then modeled down the runway.
- Photo Booth and Holiday Craft: Students took personal photos with players and cheerleaders and created holiday ornaments to take home with them.
- The North Pole Cupcake Decorating Workshop by Amphora Bakery: Students had the opportunity to decorate Christmas Cupcakes to take home with them, donated by Amphora Bakery, as well as a holiday card.
Toys for Tots Collection
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a not for profit organization authorized by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Department of Defense to provide fundraising and other necessary support for the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Toys for Tots provides joy and a message of hope to less fortunate children through the gift of a new toy or book during the holiday season. These gifts offer children hope, recognition and a positive memory they will cherish for a lifetime. Many of the books, games and sports equipment that are provided as gifts make a significant contribution to the educational, social and recreational development of these children.
Redskins fans are encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys at a Redskins team store throughout the holidays.
