The 5 O'Clock Club: Rate the coaching staff

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…

NFL: Washington Redskins at Arizona Cardinals Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The 5 o’clock club aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.

Coaching is a tough profession.

It involves technical knowledge (X’s & O’s), and a lot of human interpersonal skills. There is no single ingredient that makes a successful coach; instead, it is a combination of factors that come together in a fashion not unlike a great chef cooking a delectable dish.

A coach needs to know when to be patient and encouraging with a player to help him develop, and when to cut a player who is no longer contributing to the team’s success.

Owners need to be the same with coaches.

Very few coaches get to leave the game on their own terms. The vast majority of them are fired, and when you look at an entire career, most NFL coaches are fired multiple times.

When a team gets a good coach — especially a head coach — they need to hold onto him. Although the NFL is a performance-based, what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league, continuity is a key factor in high achievement in this team sport. Firing a coach too soon can be as destructive (maybe more destructive) than holding onto a coach too long.

The Redskins just saw a bright young coach who ‘grew up’ in the Redskins organization go to the Rams and make a splash in his first season as the head coach of the Rams. That tells me that there’s likely to be something good going on among the coaches we have here in DC.

What do you think of the men who have responsibility for building and guiding the team?
