New, comments

Mark Tyler gives you three off-season scenarios to contemplate.

With Kirk Cousin’s future in D.C. up in the air, I wanted to take a look at three hypothetical scenarios that could play out this off-season.

We won’t know what the exact salary cap number will be until the season ends, but the Redskins are estimated to have between $55-60 million in cap space in 2018. I went low in my projections below, using $55 million as our projected cap space. The numbers for player cap hits are just estimates, as are projected players who could actually hit free agency, so take these with a grain of salt.

Scenario 1:

  • Redskins re-sign Kirk Cousins to a 5 year, $140 million contract, including a $55 million signing bonus and $100 million guaranteed; making him the highest paid player in the NFL. $27 million cap hit/2018

Free Agents:

  • Re-sign Zach Brown - $5 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Spencer Long - $4 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Trent Murphy - $7 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Mason Foster - $2 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Ryan Grant - $2 million cap hit/2018
  • Sign Chris Hubbard (G - Steelers) - $3 million cap hit/2018

We have about $5 million to sign draft picks.

Draft (first three rounds):

RD 1: Roquan Smith LB Georgia

RD 2: Vita Vea DT Washington

RD 3: Ronald Jones RB USC

Scenario 2:

  • The Redskins are unable to work out a long-term deal with Cousins, and he is given the Transition Tag. $29 ($28.73) million cap hit in 2018.

Free Agents:

  • Re-sign Zach Brown - $5 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Spencer Long - $4 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Mason Foster - $2 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Ryan Grant - $2 million cap hit/2018
  • Sign Cody Latimer (WR - Broncos) - $4 million cap hit/2018
  • Sign Oday Aboushi (G - Seahawks) - $4 million cap hit/2018

We have about $5 million to sign draft picks.

Draft (first three rounds):

RD 1: Christian Wilkins DT Clemson

RD 2: Josh Adams RB ND

RD 3: Tegray Scales LB Indiana

Scenario 3:

  • Kirk Cousins walks, and signs a contract making him the highest paid player in the NFL.

Free Agents:

  • Re-sign Bashaud Breeland - $8 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Zach Brown - $5 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Spencer Long - $4 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Trent Murphy - $7 million cap hit/2018
  • Re-sign Mason Foster - $2 million cap hit/2018
  • Sign Jarvis Landry (WR - Dolphins) - $11 million cap hit/2018
  • Sign Xavier Su’a-Filo (G - Texans) - $6 million cap hit/2018
  • Sign Star Lotulelei (DT - Panthers) - $7 million cap hit/2018

We have about $5 million to sign draft picks.

Draft (first three rounds):

RD 1: Baker Mayfield QB Oklahoma/Mason Rudolph QB Ok. St./Josh Allen QB Wyom.

RD 2: Jerome Baker LB Ohio St.

RD 3: Sony Michel RB Georgia
