Loaded Top of 2018 NFL Draft Could Drop Elite Prospects to Redskins

NCAA Football: SEC Championship-Georgia vs Auburn John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s assume that the Redskins are able to lock up Kirk Cousins this off-season to a long-term contract. Actually, this is a scenario I am growing ever more comfortable with by the day.

This will immediately eliminate quarterback from consideration with our draft pick in the 1st round (probably rounds 2-3 as well). Due to a potentially loaded 2018 draft class, and many teams needing quarterbacks, offensive tackles and Edge rushers early, the Redskins could see an elite player at a great position of need fall to them when they select in the first round. Much like what happened last year when Jonathan Allen, widely considered a top 10 talent, slipped to pick 17, the Redskins may be able to benefit from an early run on quarterbacks, offensive tackles and edge defenders, leaving them with a value-vs-need top prospect.

Below are a list of players not of immediate need for the Redskins who I feel could go in the top half of the 2018 NFL Draft.

QB’s:

Sam Darnold

Josh Rosen

Baker Mayfield

Josh Allen

Lamar Jackson

OT’s:

Orlando Brown

Mike McGlinchey

Conner Williams

Edge:

Bradley Chubb

Arden Key

Clelin Ferrell

Harold Landry

Others likely to go top 10:

Saquon Barkley RB PSU

Minkah Fitzpatrick S Alabama

Denzel Ward CB Ohio St.

Who’s Left:

I believe a run on quarterbacks, offensive tackles and edge rushers could leave the Redskins looking at a few very elite prospects at positions of need. This should leave the team with some very nice options somewhere around that 12-18 spot in the draft.

Below are 10 prospects who I feel we may have a shot at in the first round come draft day.

Derwin James S FSU

Christian Wilkins DT Clemson

Roquan Smith LB Georgia

Ronnie Harrison S Alabama

Derrius Guice RB LSU

Queston Nelson OG Notre Dame

Vita Vea DT Washington

Rashaan Evans LB Alabama

Maurice Hurst DT Michigan

Calvin Ridley WR Alabama

If the top three prospects on this list are there when we select, I immediately take any one of them. If those three of James, Wilkins and Smith (and I would rank them in this order) are all off the board, I would like to see us explore trading back and acquiring additional picks in this draft.

Three top targets of mine, if we were to trade back in this draft, would be Vita Vea, Rashaan Evans and Maurice Hurst - all players at major positions of need for the Redskins.
