Saturday Slop: Redskins vs Seahawks week

A look at the top Redskins stories of the day

Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins emerge from touted 2012 QB class | ESPN

Cousins, a fourth-round choice (102nd overall) and the eighth quarterback selected, hasn't been voted to a Pro Bowl (but played as a replacement last year) or won a playoff game. He didn't become the full-time starter until 2015, playing behind Griffin until that point. But, of all the quarterbacks who have started since 2015, Cousins owns the NFL's third best total QBR and the fifth best passer rating. He's expected to become a hotly-pursued quarterback in the offseason -- if he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Jordan Reed, Shaun Lauvao, and Matt Ioannidis are out vs Seahawks | ESPN

In all, three-fifths of the Redskins' starting offensive line won't play, and a fourth, Scherff, is questionable. But Scherff at least participated in practice the past two days, though in limited fashion. Coach Jay Gruden had said Thursday that "things are looking up" in regard to Scherff, and Friday did nothing to alter that outlook.

Redskins activate Hall off the PUP list | ESPN

Hall tore his ACL in Week 3 last season but returned to practice two weeks ago. He will play a key role in the secondary with rookie Montae Nicholson dealing with his second shoulder injury of the season.

Redskins want Kirk Cousins to attack more downfield | ESPN

This number shows the difference: In 2016, Cousins ranked second with 69 pass plays of 20 yards or more -- 46 went to receivers (tied for fourth). This year, he ranks third in that category with 28 -- but only 11 have gone to receivers (18th).

Week 9 Redskins vs Seattle preview | CSN

Wilson makes a living scrambling around, extending plays, and picking up key first downs. Seattle's offense ranks 6th in the NFL in converting third downs. Washington's defense ranks 23rd in the NFL in stopping third down conversions. The numbers certainly tilt in the Seahawks favor, and Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Manusky must prepare to attack on third downs," I think you’ve got to be cautious of your pass lanes and trying to make sure you’re in those pass lanes as a defensive lineman.
