A surprise coach interviewed with the Redskins today for their vacant Defensive Coordinator position: Mike Pettine.
Pettine is 50 years old, went to college at UVA (was a FS), and was most recently the HC for the Cleveland Browns (2014-2015). He went 10-22 as the HC of the Browns.
Prior to that, Pettine was the DC for the Bills (2013) and Jets (2009-2012).
He was with the Ravens prior to that from 2002 to 2008 as the OLB Coach (2005-2008), Assistant DL Coach (2004), and Coaching Assistant (2002-2003).
Pettine is about as close to Rex Ryan as a team can get without hiring Rex Ryan himself. Ryan promoted Pettine to OLB Coach in Baltimore when Ryan was promoted to DC. Pettine has been known as Ryan’s “right-hand man” and was hired by Ryan to be the Jets DC when Ryan was brought on board as their HC. He led the Jets to the #1 defense in the NFL in 2009.
