“If I had stayed on my landmark and didn’t try to do too much and rush the process, I could have made that play,” Hall said. “It’s doing what the defense asks and not stepping outside that box. It’s about doing your job. We all have to be better doing our job and trusting the guy beside us to do his.”
And that leads to the defensive line, an area that, to me, has been begging for attention for a few years. They’ve needed to get more young players here (which they know) and even though they have two rookie linemen on the 53-man roster, it’s way too early to know how good they’ll be. The Redskins opted for guard/tackle Brandon Scherff over end Leonard Williamsin 2015. They have their reasons and that’s fine -- I am not a fan of taking an interior offensive linemen fifth overall, but they initially hoped he would play tackle. OK, move on.
In losses to Pittsburgh and Dallas, the Redskins pass defense has struggled in spots. Josh Norman has been stout, but the rest of the defense has looked confused in assignments and missed some coverages at times. A rookie like Fuller is unlikely to be the solution, but it is possible he could help, especially facing a Giants offense with Eli Manning throwing to Odell Beckham, Victor Cruz and rookie Sterling Shepard.
Based on eight sacks as a rookie - especially the way he closed the season - Smith came into 2016 with high expectations. Through two games, his play has been underwhelming, like much of the Washington defense, but Smith won't let the slow start get to him.
