Redskins vs Steelers Week 1 Injury Report: Josh Doctson Questionable, Expected to be Active

The injury news is mostly good news for the burgundy and gold this week.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins enter their Monday night season opener in relatively good health.  The offensive side of the ball holds the biggest question marks for fans: will Josh Doctson finally make his premier, and will Matt Jones take back over his first team duties?

I tend to think the answer to both questions is "yes," though I believe Doctson will have a limited role.  With an otherwise healthy receiving and tight end corps, the Redskins have little to lose by introducing Doctson into the mix slowly.  As for Jones, both the running back and his coach have indicated that he'll take the field, even if it means playing through a little soreness. (Under the old injury protocol, I imagine Jones would have earned the "probable" designation.) Golston is the latest addition to the list, and he's one that should draw attention.  With Reyes and Golston listed as questionable, that leaves the Redskins with only four healthy defensive linemen.  The shuffle that follows could be interesting, with Ziggy Hood listed as the back up NT and starting left end.  Will Chris Baker see time back in the NT position tonight?

The Steelers enter the game with only clear-cut designations, and Markus Wheaton likely will draw the most attention for his status.  Wheaton should have been the one to line up opposite Antonio Brown, and in his absences, the Redskins may feel more comfortable focusing their efforts to contain Brown with Sammie Coates, Darrius Heyward-Bey, and Eli Rogers as his counterparts.  The Steelers will also have to hope their starting offensive line escapes without injury, as Wallace is the second-team lineman for both the center and guard positions.

Note: The Competition Committee recently approved changes to injury reports.  "Probable" does not exist on reports anymore, "questionable" means uncertain, "doubtful" means "unlikely," and "out" (obviously) means "out."  Teams need not designate a player's status on the game report if the player is full go, even after he showed up on the practice report during the week.
