I know what you're thinking. I was thinking the same thing. When we decided that now was the time to schedule our look-back at two past drafts, I was immediately put into a negative mood. Surely this would be an exercise in soul-crushingly depressing discussion, right?
We invited Hogs Haven writer and general positive guy-about-town Aaron Lesher on to help us go through the 2012 and 2013 Redskins draft classes. What I found was that for the first time in...decades, perhaps...the change in course this organization has executed is becoming more and more evident. Of course, it is not just about the drafts, but I think that this timeframe may very well be the end of the era that I defined as one in which the Redskins "created the perfect place for people to come and fail." (I only put myself in quotes there because I spent a considerable amount of time pile-driving that point, and I want to make sure it is clear I don't currently think that way.)
As far as spirited discussion go on July 5, this one was everything I hoped it would be. Since these first two paragraphs pretty much set up our entire conversation, I will offer you only one bullet point on this one:
- Tom Compton, a late-round draft pick in 2012 as an offensive tackle, put in some solid work as a tight end in 2015, leading someone on the show to nudge the grade for that draft class a bit higher
