The Washington Redskins play the New York Giants on New Year’s Day, and barring a tie between the Packers and Lions, they will be in the playoffs with a win. The Redskins are currently 7 point favorites at home, with oddsmakers not buying that Coach Ben McAdoo will play his starters for the whole game. The Giants are locked into the #5 spot, and gain nothing from a win this week besides the satisfaction of keeping the Redskins out of the playoffs.
Below are the possible playoff scenarios for the NFC which has two spots still “open”. The Cowboys, Seahawks, Falcons, and Giants are all guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. The Packers, Lions, and Redskins and playing for those last two spots.

The Redskins have 4 potential opponents they could face, and they all have the same chance of happening(25%). Some of the scenarios are much more likely than others, but we’ll got through all of them. Here is how each matchup can happen. The three games deciding these outcomes are the Falcons vs the Saints, the Seahawks vs the 49ers, and the Packers vs the Lions.
Washington Redskins vs Green Bay Packers
The Redskins will travel to Green Bay to face the NFC North champions if:
Scenario #1: New Orleans, San Francisco, and Green Bay win
Scenario #2: Atlanta, San Francisco, and Green Bay win
Washington Redskins vs Atlanta Falcons
The Redskins will travel to Atlanta to face the NFC South champions if:
Scenario #1: New Orleans, Seattle, and Green Bay win
Scenario #2: New Orleans, San Francisco, and Detroit win
Washington Redskins vs Detroit Lions
The Redskins will travel to Detroit to face the NFC North champions if:
Scenario #1: Atlanta, San Francisco, and Detroit win
Scenario #2: New Orleans, Seattle, and Detroit win
Washington Redskins vs Seattle Seahawks
The Redskins will travel to Seattle to face the NFC West champions if:
Scenario #1: Atlanta, Seattle, and Green Bay win
Scenario #2: Atlanta, Seattle, and Detroit win
Looking through these scenarios, it’s looking more and more like the Redskins will be traveling to Seattle if they get into the playoffs on Sunday. Atlanta is still trying to lock up the #2 seed and a first round bye in the playoffs, and I see them getting the win this week. That eliminates the Atlanta Falcons from the list.
The 49ers are another terrible team led by Chip Kelly, and I don’t see them finishing their season with a win against the Seahawks who are also trying for the #2 seed. That will eliminate the Green Bay Packers from the list.
The Packers have all the momentum heading into the playoffs, and the Lions have been struggling, losing their last two games, and barely beating a terrible Bears team before that. The Packers should walk out of Detroit with the NFC North division title, and the #4 seed in the playoffs. This eliminates the Detroit Lions from the list.
That leaves the Redskins going to Seattle to once again play the Seahawks in the playoffs. As long as the Falcons and Seahawks win the games they’re favored to win, it won’t matter who wins between the Lions and Packers(just no ties please). The Redskins would travel across the country, for a likely Sunday playoff game in one of the loudest stadiums in the league. The Redskins have been eliminated from the playoffs 3 out of their last 4 times by the Seahawks, and will be looking to break that streak.
Who would you want the Redskins to face in round 1 of the playoffs this year?
