Warpath To The Postseason: NFL Week 17

New, comments

For the Redskins, win and you’re in*. It’s that simple really. (*Certain exclusions may apply.)

By now, you probably already know what it will take for the Redskins to punch their ticket to return to the post-season for the second year in a row for the first time since 1992.

With the Redskins' domination of the Bears on Saturday, paired with the Cowboys knocking off the Lions on Sunday, there are two scenarios in which Washington can punch their playoff ticket on New Year’s Day:

Washington Redskins

Washington clinches a playoff berth:

1) WAS win + GB-DET game does not end in a tie OR

2) WAS tie + GB loss + TB loss or tie

That’s about as close to controlling their own destiny as anyone could reasonably hope going into the final week of the season. If they can take care of business at home against a division rival who they’ve already defeated once this season, then they deserve a spot in the postseason. If not, well... I suppose we can have that conversation if we need to then.

Washington’s playoff odds are slightly better than 50/50, according to Five Thirty Eight, with chances of postseason play sitting at 58% going into week 17.

Let’s look at the NFC standings:

1) TB win + WAS tie + GB loss + TB clinches strength of victory tiebreaker over GB

Things are a little less exciting over in the AFC, with Baltimore’s loss on Christmas Day, the top 6 are pretty much all set in stone with some wiggle room with seedings still be determined.
