The Washington Redskins will sign OLB Houston Bates from the team's practice squad today according to ESPN's Adam Caplan. The report has been confirmed by multiple Redskins reporters, and the team will likely make the announcement today. The news comes a day after Jackson Jeffcoat was injured in yesterday's practice. Jeffcoat was listed as probable for the game, but his thigh injury could limit his effectiveness. The Redskins also have Ryan Kerrigan returning to the lineup after being limited in the offseason by knee surgery. Head Coach Jay Gruden said that he will be monitored and Kerrigan will be able to determine his snap count. This leaves two OLBs who aren't injured or recovering from injury heading into Week 1, Trent Murphy and Preston Smith.
There have been no reports on who will be released to make room for Bates on the roster. The Redskins currently have 10 offensive linemen, making it the most crowded group on the team. And the there is always the lingering question about what the team will do with QB Robert Griffin III who was cleared to play yesterday, but will be the 3rd string QB heading into Week 1.
