The Redskins continued their quest to beef up the defensive front on Monday when they signed 28-year-old former Houston Texans nose tackle Jerrell Powe.  The team has not yet officially announced the signing, but multiple sources have stated that the signing was listed on today's NFL transaction report.

Jerrell Powe is now the 11th defensive linemen on the roster.  At 6-foot-2 and 331-pounds, Powe fits the mold of a true nose tackle more than most of the team's other linemen.

Powe made appearances in all 16 games last season for the Texans and started in three of them.  Per PFF he failed to record a single QB pressure over the course of his 16 games and 277 snaps last season and only earned a positive grade from the site's game charters once all year (Week 14 at Jacksonville).

He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL draft with the 199th overall pick.  Powe spent three seasons with the Chiefs prior to signing with the Texans last March.  Powe was only able to earn one start and record a single sack while in Kansas City.  He only earned a positive PFF grade in three of his twelve regular season appearances with the team.

The Mississippi native had more luck in college, where he stayed home to play for Ole Miss.  Powe earned 2nd team All-SEC honors in his junior and senior seasons.  He majored in criminal justice.

Powe played his high school ball for Wayne County High School in Waynesboro, Miss and Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va.  He was a highly sought after college recruit, as he was rated as the number one player in Mississippi, in the top five at his position and in the top 25 overall in the country.  Powe was a two-sport star in high school; he also played varsity basketball.
