The Cowboys re-signed right tackle Doug Free to a 3 year deal, worth $15 million this morning which gives backup RT Jermey Parnell the chance to enter free agency. Earlier today it was reported that the Redskins had interest in Houston Texans OT Derek Newton, but that quickly ended when he was re-signed to a 5 year, $26.5 million deal. The Redskins re-signed OT Tom Compton this week, and also have 2nd year Morgan Moses under contract going into next season, but he will be returning from Lisfranc surgery. Tyler Polumbus is not expected to be re-signed after losing his starting job to Compton last season.
There has been speculation that the Redskins would go after whichever tackle the Cowboys didn't re-sign since the team hired Bill Callahan to be their new Offensive Line Coach. Callahan spent the last 3 years with Dallas as their Offensive Coordinator/OL Coach and knows both players well. Parnell(6'6", 315 lbs, 28 years old) started 7 games last year, including two playoff games. Doug Free was dealing with various injuries and Parnell was able to step in and play better than expected on a Cowboys line that has been stocked with 1st round picks over the last 4 years. There is expected to be a lot of interest in Parnell with a weak OT free agent class, and the market price is starting to be set before free agency officially begins. Will the Redskins be willing to spend to fix the right side of the line?
One other OL note: Continue to hear Cowboys OT Jermey Parnell will do well. Redskins, Jags and Bucs for him.— Mike Garafolo (@MikeGarafolo) March 7, 2015
