Hogs Haven Draft Profiles: Trae Waynes, CB

Hogs Haven takes a look at NFL prospects heading into the 2015 draft

Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

Trae Waynes

Cornerback

Height: 6' 0", Weight: 186 lbs

Michigan State

Strengths: Trae is a confident player. He has the size for the position. He has the mentality that teams want to see in a cornerback. He is very good in run support and can pop a running back with some authority. He is amazing in pass coverage. He rarely gets beat over the top. He uses his body to keep receivers from getting leverage. Trae has good field awareness and can quickly diagnose what the offense is doing. He is a true "island" cornerback. He finished his junior season with MSU with 46 tackles, a sack, three interceptions and eight passes broken up. His Combine numbers were good.

Weaknesses: Trae could stand to bulk up a bit. He has a tendency to stay upright when he backpedals. This allows receivers to push him around. As an island cornerback, he has the tendency to freelance. This might not be desirable to some teams. He is also very hands-on. He will draw a lot of penalties if his technique is not corrected.

Bottom Line: Trae Waynes is going to make some NFL team very happy. He only allowed two touchdowns in the past two seasons. He can already match up with most receivers in bump & run. With some coaching on technique and some time in the weight room, he will be a shutdown corner in the NFL.

Projected Round: 1-2

Team He Fits Best On: Steelers, Dolphins, Saints, Titans
