The Redskins were expected to sign a veteran quarterback to be on the roster with Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins who are both entering the final year of their rookie contracts. They have apparently found that veteran...for the 2nd year in a row. Colt McCoy was an under the radar signing last year when he signed his 1 year, minimum salary benefit contract last season, but ended up playing more than anyone expected due to injury and poor play by the QBs in front of him. His season ended early due to a neck injury that he received at the hands of St. Louis Rams defensive end Robert Quinn. McCoy started 4 games last season, and had 91 completions for 1,057 yards and 4 TDs. He also rushed 16 times for 66 yards and a touchdown.
If McCoy has signed another 1 year deal, the Redskin still don't have a QB under contract for the 2016 season, and will need to see who doesn't fly off the QB Carousel this year. Robert Griffin III is the presumed starter going into the season after Head Coach Jay Gruden proclaimed it at this year's NFL Scouting Combine. Kirk Cousins has been working this offseason to once again try to win the starting job, and Team President Bruce Allen stated on the radio last week that no one was calling about a trade for him. And of course there are the rumors that new Washington Redskins GM Scot McCloughan will not pass on former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota if he falls to the Redskins 5th overall pick. The Redskins have a 5th year option of Robert Griffin III that they have until May to exercise that is worth $16.155 million. It seems unlikely this will happen, but the option is only guaranteed for injury and the Redskins could take that risk to secure him for one more year. The most likely outcome is Griffin starts the year and is given the opportunity to earn a new deal. What happens after that is anyone's guess.
QB Colt McCoy is re-signing with Washington, per source. So it's RGIII, Kirk Cousins and McCoy back together again.
