Barry Cofield Released by the Redskins Per Agent

The Redskins have started trimming their cap with the release of Barry Cofield

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Scot McCloughan made his first free agent signing as GM of the Washington Redskins by acquiring his former draft pick, DE Ricky Jean-Francois, with a 3 year, $9 million contract.  Today it's being reported that he's cut the first player of the offseason, releasing DE Barry Cofield.  He was set to count for $7.677 million this season.  The Redskins will save $4.122 million, but will carry a $3.555 million in dead cap money. Cofield's agent, Mike McCartney, broke the news on twitter and it has not been confirmed by the team.

ESPN 980's Chris Russell reports that he could be waived/injured with a labrum issue.  Cofield was placed on IR with designation to return last season after suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 1 vs the Houston Texans.  He was activated on November 11th, and returned to the lineup in Week 11 vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  He only started two games after returning, and was used as a rotational player for most of the season.
