Shane Ray
Outside Linebacker/Defensive End
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 245 lbs.
Missouri
Strengths: One of the most athletic prospects in this draft, regardless of position. Should be greatly helped by the combine. Claims to have run a 4.44 40. 40"+ vertical, 10' broad jump, and benches over 400 lbs. In short, he's a specimen. Very explosive, especially at the snap, and has perhaps the best first step of anyone in this year's draft. Frequently beats OT's off of pure speed and explosion alone. He's not a one-trick pony, however. He has an arsenal of moves to get to the QB including using a jab-step and rushing to the inside as well as a great swim move. Very good with change of direction and shows good ability to play in space. Can have success standing or with his hand in the dirt. Extremely quick and reactive. Also known for having a good motor and constantly gives great effort, even in the run game. Father was an NFL player who also went to Missouri and was drafted in the fifth round by the Vikings. So... genetics.
Weaknesses: He's always been one of, if not the most athletic person on the field. He won't have quite that same advantage in the league. He's also not the strongest guy (despite the 400-lb bench press). This lack of strength affects him negatively in the run game. Much more speed than strength. Once a good OT gets his hands on Ray he's often largely neutralized. It's just really hard for OT's to get their hands on him. He's been known to be a bit too aggressive. He was ejected during the SEC Championship...
Bottom Line: He's a lot like Bruce Irvin. Pure speed and explosion. He may benefit more from the combine than just about any other player as he's as athletically gifted as they come. Natural pass rusher with versatility to play in 3-4 and/or 4-3.
Projected Round: 1
Team He Fits Best On: Jaguars, Raiders, Redskins, Bears, Falcons, Giants, Saints
