Last season Perry Fewell was interviewing for the Washington Redskins Head Coach job, and this season he could be interviewing for the team's Defensive Backs coach if Raheem Morris goes to the Atlanta Falcons as expected. Things change quickly in the NFL, and the Giants fired their second coordinator in two years after missing the playoffs again this year. Fewell had been the Giants DC since 2010.
He broke into the NFL as a defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1998-2002 under current Giants HC Tom Coughlin. When Coughlin's staff was fired after the 2002 season he moved on to the St. Louis Rams from 2003-2004. He then spent a year with the Chicago Bears as DBs coach. The Buffalo Bills hired him to be their Defensive Coordinator, and he had that job from 2006-2009. He took over as the interim head coach when Dick Jauron was fired in November. He did not keep the HC job, and this allowed him to go back to his former Head Coach Tom Coughlin and join the New York Giants as their Defensive Coordinator.
New Washington Redskins Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry has spent the week down at Senior Bowl practices, but he has also been cleaning out his predecessor Jim Haslett's defensive coaching staff. On Wednesday, OLBs coach Brian Baker revealed that he was not being retained for next season. On Thursday, it was reported that DL coach Jacob Burney was not coming back. And now today reports have come out saying it's merely a formalitiy that Raheem Morris will be joining the Falcons as a defensive assistant/defensive coordinator. Inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti is expected to be the only defensive coach retained for next season. Now Barry needs to start hiring position coaches for his staff. Fewell is also getting interest from the San Francisco 49ers who just hired Eric Mangini as their new DC this week.
Would Perry Fewell be an upgrade over Raheem Morris?
