NFL.com's Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Washington Redskins plan on hiring San Diego Chargers LB coach Joe Barry as their newest Defensive Coordinator. Barry would replace Jim Haslett, who was hired by Mike Shanahan, and retained by Jay Gruden last year. Barry has connections to Bruce Allen and Jay Gruden(and a few other coaches) through their time with another team. Barry comes from the Buccaneers coaching tree, and won a Super Bowl ring in 2002 when he was the Bucs linebackers coach. Barry has experience at defensive coordinator, holding the job with the Detroit Lions(07-08). Barry joined the Chargers as their linebackers coach in 2012.
Yesterday it was reported that the decision would come down to either Barry or current Redskins DBs coach Raheem Morris. If Barry does officially get the job, Morris's status with the team is unclear. He has strong ties with Bruce Allen and others, and has the support of the players. There were rumors swirling last night that Barry would get the job, while retaining Morris in his current role.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Stay tuned for more updates.
