Redskins Place Cofield on Short-Term IR; Add Davis to Active Roster; Sign Three to Practice Squad

Akeem Davis takes Barry Cofield's spot on the active roster while Hamm, Hopkins, and McNutt join the practice squad.

Following the release of WR Nick Williams and CB Richard Crawford from the team's practice squad, the Washington Redskins have placed NT Barry Cofield on short-term IR.  In Cofield's absence, it would appear that Chris Baker will slide over from DE and man the starting NT spot while Jarvis Jenkins is likely to move into the starting lineup at DE along with Jason Hatcher.  The Redskins DL depth will now consist of Kedric Golston, Clifton Geathers, and Frank Kearse.  Cofield won't be able to return to practice before six weeks from today and can't rejoin the active roster for games before eight weeks from today.

In a corresponding move to fill out the active 53-man roster, the Redskins have promoted S Akeem Davis from their practice squad.  Davis made the active roster after final cuts following the preseason but was moved to the practice squad a day later to make room for S Duke Ihenacho, who was claimed off waivers.  It is unclear whether Bacarri Rambo or Ihenacho are likely to start alongside Ryan Clark this week against Jacksonville.  This will be the last game of Brandon Meriweather's two-game suspension.  The Safety depth beyond that will now be Trenton Robinson and Akeem Davis.

The Redskins also filled out their 10-man practice squad following the departure of Nick Williams, Richard Crawford, and Akeem Davis.  The three players signed are: TE Je'Ron Hamm, DL Derrick Hopkins, and WR Marvin McNutt.

Hamm is a 6'3", 236 lb TE from Louisiana-Monroe who converted from WR.  He was originally signed by the Saints as a rookie UDFA following the draft this year and was released by the team on August 21.

Hopkins is a 6', 321 lb DL from Virginia Tech.  He was released by the Baltimore Ravens on August 29 after receiving a $10,000 bonus to sign with the team earlier in the offseason as an UDFA.

McNutt is a 6'2", 225 lb WR out of Iowa.  He is Iowa's all-time leading receiver in TDs and was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.  He spent his first season on the Eagles' practice squad before being released.  He spent most of last year with the Carolina Panthers before being released on August 24.
