A look at what the Redskins have to do to beat the Jaguars this week.
A look at how the Redskins match up at each position versus the Jaguars.
Tight end Jordan Reed is out and place kicker Kai Forbath is questionable for Sunday's game against Jacksonville. Meanwhile, the Redskins' defensive line depth will be tested -- as expected -- with Kedric Golston doubtful.
Teams will use that on occasion, but not every team is comfortable operating that way. It might not fit the scheme they run to do it that often. But it wasn't the first time a team has done that, nor will it be the last. Also, Houston went very conservative in the second half in any second- and third-and-long situation -- either running or throwing screens. Also, the Texans had too many third-and-1s. So it wasn't just the spread formation, it also was situational. Plus, it would help if the Redskins ever got a lead and forced teams to throw.
The Jags' defense is tough but vulnerable. They play relatively fast and are not a bad unit. They have elements of Seattle's defense without the Seahawks talent: they'll stunt their ends inside wider than most teams; they'll use a lot of eight-man boxes. One note: The Redskins ran well vs. Seattle in the playoff game; they feel good about their run game entering this one. Against the Eagles, the Jaguars were determined to stop the run and LeSean McCoy. But the Eagles hurt them a couple times on zone read play-action passes - and other times quarterback Nick Foles failed to see or connect with wide-open targets downfield off such action.
With Barry Cofield out until at least mid-November and Kedric Golston likely out this game, the Redskins are precariously thin along the defensive line. One player who is likely to benefit from this is Jaguars running back Toby Gerhart. It appears that he is over the ankle injury that caused him to leave Jacksonville's game against the Eagles last week. Jim Haslett should remember him well. In the 2011 game at FedEx field where Adrian Peterson went out with a torn ACL, Gerhart filled in and ripped through the Redskins for 109 yards on 11 carries as the Vikings won.
