HH's Hump Day NFL Pick'em - Week 2

Guess what day it is??? Mike Harar continues Year 2 of his weekly pick'em contest - with new and improved prizes!!

Thomas B. Shea

Welcome everybody to Week 2 of the Hump Day NFL Pick'em!

Last week, we announced the exciting news that we have teamed up with Redskins' team sponsor NRG, and they have been gracious enough to provide the winnings each week!

What is not new or exciting, however, is how our Redskins performed in their first game, or how we here at the Hump Day offices performed in our first week.  Just as the Redskins had several untimely mistakes that led to their demise, we had several unfortunate picks and ended the week at 5-10-1 and with an unsightly total of five points.  Let's see if our contestants did any better on their quest to win the awesome prize provided by our friends at NRG, a football signed by Alfred Morris.  Here were the results:

As you can see, it wasn't pretty, as no one even hit the double digit mark in points.  However, we did have a tie at the top and, as per our rules, that meant a fair-and-square random drawing among the four first place contestants.  With the help of our lovely assistant, the following name was drawn out of a hat:

Congrats to monroekelly21!!!!!!  Please email me your address and we will get your prize right out to you.

Now, let us shake off that rough start and move on to Week 2.

Here we go!

For those of you who are new to our game, I state the rules:

This is a weekly contest in which I will make my game picks each Wednesday and invite you, the loyal Hogs Haven readers, to make your own picks in the comments section.

I will incorporate the spread as determined by Las Vegas the Tuesday before the games and you can earn 1 point for each correct choice.  I will add up the points at the end of each week, and the winner will earn a fabulous prize, courtesy of NRG, that will then be mailed to them.  If there are multiple contestants tied for the lead, there will be a drawing to determine the overall winner.  There will only be ten contestants, so the first ten responses will get in.

Each week the prize will change, and this year (unlike last year), a prize will be given out every single week since you are now only competing against each other and not me.  Simple right??

Here are my picks for this week:

Pittsburgh Steelers (+3) at Baltimore Ravens: Always looking for a competitive edge, Antonio Brown sent Ravens punter Sam Hoch a picture of him bowling over Browns punter Spencer Lanning along with a one word note: "You." Pick: Steelers (+3)

Detroit Lions (+2.5) at Carolina Panthers: The Panthers announced on Monday that Cam Newton, aka Superman, will be back starting for them at quarterback this week.  Last week's starter and now current backup Derek "Jimmy Olsen" Anderson took the news as well as could be expected. Pick: Lions (+2.5)

Jacksonville Jaguars (+6) at Washington Redskins: In a very unscientific study, the majority of polled Redskins fans believe the 2014 season will be over for their team if they lose this game.  However, in another poll, those same fans said they believe regular Doritos are better than Cool Ranch Doritos, so credibility instantly became an issue. Pick: Redskins (-6)

Dallas Cowboys (+4) at Tennessee Titans: After last week's opening game debacle, reports have surfaced that Jerry Jones is willing to trade six first round picks and the nickname "America's Team" to the Browns in exchange for Johnny Manziel. Pick: Titans (-4)

Arizona Cardinals (+2) at New York Giants: Peyton Manning called his brother Eli on Tuesday and yelled at him for a while, finally getting out years of pent up frustration for making the term "Manning Face" into a bad thing.  Pick: Cardinals (+2)

Miami Dolphins (PK) at Buffalo Bills: In this early season game featuring two powerhouse franchises, one team will go home with their hopes for an undefeated season dashed.  Pick: Bills (PK)

New England Patriots (-3.5) at Minnesota Vikings: In a move designed to ease any leftover New England anger after their Week 1 loss to the Dolphins, Minnesota team brass will put up positive Patriots articles all around the walls, pump in Enya music on a loop, and set up a snow cone machine and puppy adoption area in the visiting team's locker room before the game. Pick: Patriots (-3.5)

New Orleans Saints (-6) at Cleveland Browns: The most disappointing thing about the Saints' loss last week was that I didn't start Mark Ingram on my fantasy team. Pick: Saints (-6)

Atlanta Falcons (+5) at Cincinnati Bengals: Both teams had Week 1 victories and both teams have the capability to put up impressive offensive numbers.  But only one team lost Jay Gruden in the offseason.  Pick: Falcons (+5)

St. Louis Rams (+5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Bucs head coach Lovie Smith struggled in his press conference Tuesday morning while trying to praise Rams quarterback Austin Davis without laughing. Pick: Buccaneers (-5)

Seattle Seahawks (-5.5) at San Diego Chargers: One thing I think the NFL and the game commentators miss out on when broadcasting Seahawks games is that not only is Russell Wilson the best quarterback of all time, he's also the best teammate and human being of all time.  Pick: Seahawks (-5.5)

Houston Texans (-3) at Oakland Raiders: Dear Derek Carr and the Raiders: Don't give up two fumbles in the red zone and you can totally win this.  Oh, and maybe block JJ Watt, too.  Pick: Texans (-3)

New York Jets (+8.5) at Green Bay Packers: The Packers reportedly worked out former Redskins preseason great Lache Seastrunk this week.  If they sign him, they immediately become my pick for this year's Super Bowl champions and my second favorite team (surpassing the Pat White led Edmonton Eskimos).  Pick: Packers (-8.5)

Kansas City Chiefs (+13) at Denver Broncos: At this point, every Chiefs fan on Earth is convinced the NFL schedule makers are just out to get them. Pick: Broncos (-13)

Chicago Bears (+7) at San Francisco 49ers: At this point, every Bears fan on Earth is convinced the NFL schedule makers are just out to get them.  Pick: Bears (+7)

Philadelphia Eagles (+3) at Indianapolis Colts: Feeling pretty good about themselves after coming back from down 17 last week to beat the Jaguars, Chip Kelly and the rest of the Eagles staff put Nick Foles in charge and said they were heading to Tijuana and would be back by Sunday morning.  Pick: Colts (-3)

So there are my Week 2 picks. The winner this week will have this fabulous prize to look forward to, courtesy of NRG:

Garcon_medium

That's right - a brand new Pierre Garcon jersey (available in sizes S, M, L or XL)!

I will announce this week's winner next Wednesday on the next Hump Day post.

Good luck!!
