Redskins Practice Squad: What We Know

New, comments

The Redskins have been signing their released players to the practice squad today. Who made the squad?

Rafael Suanes-USA TODAY Sports

The Redskins had 10 spots to fill today after the waiver claims period ended at 12 PM.  After initially hearing the Redskins had not used the #2 priority on the waiver claims list, reports started coming in about the team claiming S Duke Ihenacho from the Denver Broncos.  Claiming Ihenacho meant that the Redskins had to cut someone to make room on the 53-man roster, and that player was S Akeem Davis.  The undrafted free agent was a long shot to make the team at the start of the offseason, but with strong special teams play, and a series of typical Redskins misfortune's at safety, he made the final roster yesterday.  Now he will have to work his way back up from the practice squad where he is likely to be signed.

The rest of the squad is filled with a lot of familiar faces.  Chase Minnifield has been here for what seems like a 10 year career, and he returns to his roots on the practice squad.  There are 3 former Redskins draft picks on the squad so far.  Ted Bolser was a 7th round pick this year, and was a long shot to make the squad.  Richard Crawford, Chris Thompson, and Phillip Thomas were have all been coming back from injuries, but the staff likes their potential enough to try to develop them(let them continue to recover) this year.  Nick Williams and Tevita Stevens have been on the practice squad before and weren't making the team this year.

There is still room for two more players on the squad.  Richard Crawford accounts for one of the two "experienced player" slots.  The only other Redskins player that was cut recently to fall into that category is C Kevin Kowalski, and it is unlikely the Redskins sign him with Tevita Stevens already added.  This means the team could look elsewhere for a player to fill that spot, or simply fill it with a player that falls under the old rules of eligibility.

Stay tuned for more updates.
