Continuing to look at Jay Gruden's play-calling by down and distance. Here we go:
Location: Ravens 13
Down and Distance: 1st and 10
Personnel: 11
Play Type: Run
Gun Left Sweep here. Tyler Eifert is an in-line TE and Gio Bernard is in the backfield.
The play results in a gain of 4.
Location: Bengals 42
Down and Distance: 1st and 10
Personnel: 11
Play Type: Pass
As we talked about before, the speed out at the top of the screen is a natural pick play to beat man coverage. There is already a lot of space between the speed out and the defender playing over top of him. The Stick/hitch route at the top is designed to find space in a zone. At the bottom of the screen, the out route is suppose to beat man coverage and the post can be hit in a zone or in man if the CB gives away inside leverage.
The Ravens run Cover 1 man. Andy Dalton tries to get it into Marvin Jones on the hitch route but it's a poor read and a poor throw. The play results in an interception.
Location: Bengals 16
Down and Distance: 1st and 10
Personnel: 21
Play Type: Run
This is the second time we've seen this play on first down. It's that 24 Counter Trap. The O-Line and BenJarvis Green-Ellis run like it's a stretch right but when BJGE gets the ball he cuts back left and follows Eifert who is making the "trap" block.
The play results in a gain of 1.
Location: Ravens 40
Down and Distance: 1st and 10
Personnel: 11
Play Type: Pass
On this play we see a second variation of the out/post combo at the bottom of the screen. The hitch by Eifert is designed to move the sticks by finding a hole if it's zone. Depending on what kind of zone, the outside hitch at the top can beat man or zone if run correctly.
Andy Dalton makes a poor throw. In fact, he throws it directly between the two hitches. He might have thought that his out route was to that side. The play results in an incomplete pass.
Location: Bengals 22
Down and Distance: 1st and 10

This one is pretty self-explanatory. 22 Give.
The play results in a gain of 2.

The hitch routes on the outsides can beat man coverage and Cover 3. The seam routes can beat man coverage and Cover 2 Zone.

Here is your standard screen pass. Bernard goes up to the line to "block" and after 3 seconds him and two OLineman release intho the flat.
The Ravens end up calling a blitz from the same side as the screen which blows open the play. The play results in a touchdown.
Location: 50 yard line
Down and Distance: 1st and 10

These plays look like read-option but Dalton hasn't been reading. By doing this though, it does open up the read-option for other times in the game and other games.
The play results in no gain.

It's late in the game and Jay Gruden is expecting a zone/prevent type coverage. He runs all hitches so Dalton can find the WR that sits in the open zone for a quick completion. There's a fly route at the top on the outside in case there's a rare occurrence that Ravens play man coverage in this game situation
Dalton finds Tyler Eifert on his hitch route. The play results in a gain of 9.

Raw Numbers
- Out of 87 offensive plays, 34 of them occurred on 1st and 10
- Out of 34 plays, 17 were run plays and 17 were pass plays. (I will say that the passes on first down didn't start coming until the Bengals were falling behind. Before that, it was predominantly run.)
- Out of 34 plays, 18 were with "21" personnel, 15 were with "11" personnel, and 1 was out of "12" personnel (Once again, was predominantly 21 until we started falling behind, then 11 was more exclusive with sprinkles of 21.)
