Jon Beason hopes to be back in time for Week 1; Surgery for Clowney: and an Unlucky Friday the 13th for Veteran Corners

A look at the top NFL stories around the league.

USA TODAY Sports

Hello Everyone! Welcome to the Sloppy Seconds, your afternoon/evening update on all of the news around the NFL.

Jon Beason is shooting to return from his foot injury by Week 1 - Big Blue View

After suffering a foot injury yesterday, the New York Giants linebacker has learned he will miss approximately "X amount of time", which apparently translates into "about three months".

Jadaveon Clowney has surgery - ESPN.com

The number one pick of the Houston Texans had a procedure to fix a sports hernia and expects to be ready in time for training camp.  If all goes as planned, Clowney will make his regular season debut in Week 1 against the Redskins.

The Lions sign the last of their draft picks - DetroitLions.com

Tight end Eric Ebron, the Lions' first round pick, signed on the dotted line today.  The team hopes he will be able to play a role that is similar to the one Jimmy Graham plays with the New Orleans Saints.  My seven year old son hopes that one day all slides will be made of chocolate.  Who am I to say it won't happen?

In a domino effect, Chris Houston is released by the Lions - NFL.com

Along with the signing of Ebron today, Detroit also released a player who was their best cornerback for several seasons and who had just signed a new contract before the 2013 season.  However, Houston had an injury plagued season last year, recently underwent toe surgery and is facing rehab time.  It goes to show you that the NFL stands for "iNjuries Force cuts, pLayer".

The Chiefs released cornerback Brandon Flowers - CBSSports.com

Friday the 13th ended up being bad luck for veteran corners, as Kansas City cut Flowers today.  Flowers made the Pro Bowl last season, but his cap number is fairly high in 2014 and the Chiefs feel they may have a replacement for him in new third round pick Phillip Gaines.  This is just another example that the NFL stands for "Never Feel comfortabLe".  He is expected to be a highly sought after free agent.
