The Redskins have announce the signing of QB Colt McCoy, 27, to presumably fill the 3rd string QB that Rex Grossman held last season. McCoy was originally draft by the Cleveland Browns in the 3rd Round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He spent 3 years in Cleveland, starting 21 games in his first two years there. He was a backup in his final year with the Browns, backing up rookie QB Brandon Weeden. The following year he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, and spent the year backing up QB Colin Kaepernick.
There is still speculation that the Redskins are interested in trading 2nd string QB Kirk Cousins this offseason, and he has publicly stated that he would like the opportunity to start for a team in the NFL. Is this a move in preparation of a possible draft day trade? This move fills a need for QBs for offseason activities. The Redskins can start offseason workouts on April 7th, two weeks earlier than the rest of the league due to hiring a new coach this year. They need camp arms this offseason, and also might decide to carry a 3rd QB again this season.
