Washington Redskins Draft Profiles: Troy Niklas, TE

Hogs Haven takes a look at NFL prospects heading into the 2014 draft

Jared Wickerham

Troy Niklas

Tight End

Height: 6' 6", Weight: 270 lbs

Notre Dame

Strengths: Troy Niklas ended the 2013 season with 32 catches for 498 yards and five touchdowns. At 6'6" and 270 lbs, Niklas is an imposing figure on offense. He uses his size to his advantage. He blocks well, and uses his size to push off defenders. He is not the quickest tight end in the draft, but he uses his size and power to knock defenders off-balance and get downfield.

Weaknesses: Niklas was a surprise draft announcement. He started only one year at Notre Dame, after Tyler Eifert's departure. He ran mainly curls, drags, and posts at Notre Dame. He needs to improve his route running, making them more crisp.  Niklas is not a consistent receiver and has a bit of an issue with ball security. He likes to catch the ball with his body, rather than his hands.

Bottom Line: Niklas is a great blocker and good target underneath. He's not particularly fast or agile. To excel at the next level, he will have to improve his pass catching and ball security.

Projected Round: 2-3

Team He Fits Best On: Falcons, Buccaneers, Bills
