Fred Davis Suspended Indefinitely

The Redskins announced today that TE Fred Davis has been suspended indefinitely beginning immediately.

Fred Davis was reportedly facing a 6 game suspension for violating the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy. That report appears to have been a little premature, and Davis has now been suspended indefinitely starting immediately. Due to the severity of the punishment, it appears that he was in Stage Three of the NFL's tiered treatment/discipline program. Davis was previously suspended for 4 games during the 2011 season for failing multiple drug tests following the NFL lockout. Davis signed a 1 year deal with the Redskins last offseason, and is set to become a free agent on March 11th. Speculation continues on when Fred will begin to make teams pay.

"Stage Three" mandates that a player must continue recommended treatment and submit to as many as ten surprise drug tests per month for the rest of his career. Any violation—positive test or failure to comply—results in a one-year suspension without pay. During that year, the player must comply with treatment and testing in order to be considered for reinstatement. Even if reinstated, the player will stay in "Stage Three" for the remainder of his career.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE POLICY AND PROGRAM FOR SUBSTANCES OF ABUSE

Discipline.

(1) Discipline for Failure to Comply in Stage Three: A player who fails to cooperate with testing, treatment, evaluation or other requirements imposed on him by this Policy or fails to comply with his Treatment Plan, both as determined by the Medical Director, or who has a Positive Test, will be banished from the NFL for a minimum period of one calendar year.

(2) Banishment: A player banished from the NFL pursuant to subsection (1) above will be required to adhere to his Treatment Plan and the provisions of this Intervention Program during his banishment. During a player’s period of banishment, his contract with an NFL club shall be tolled.

UPDATE #1: Fred Davis has released a statement through the NFLPA claiming he has eliminated marijuana from his life and that he took a banned substance violating the PED policy.
