What Adjustments Do the Redskins Need To Make?

New, comments

The Redskins are 2-5 and somethings got to change.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Marshall Faulk and GMC asked a question last week that I thought couldn't possibly apply to the Redskins. Can your team drive down the field in the two minute drill and secure the victory? But amazingly, that's exactly what happened. The team drove down the field, killed the clock, forced the Titans to use their timeouts, and Kai Forbath kicked the game winning field goal as time ran out.

So how did this happen when 4th quarter meltdowns have become the standard? It looks like Jay Gruden got a little preview of this week's question from Marshall Faulk "What adjustments are needed to make sure that you are fighting for a playoff spot?"  After two 1st half turnovers from QB Kirk Cousins, Gruden made the switch to 3rd string QB Colt McCoy at halftime.  On McCoy's first passing attempt, he threw a pass to Pierre Garcon that turned into a 70 yard TD.  McCoy went 11 of 12 for 128 yards with a 138.9 QB rating and got the win in relief.

Benching Cousins for McCoy wasn't the only adjustment that the coaching staff made last Sunday.  RT Tyler Polumbus has been struggling for...ever, and has been dealing with a knee injury.  Jay Gruden decided to rotate swing tackle Tom Compton into the game.  Now Compton will get the opportunity to get more playing time to help an offensive line that has been struggling in the passing and running game.

If Compton wins the starting RT job, it will be a long awaited change that fans have been screaming for for years, but do they need to do more?  Shawn Lauvao was brought in from Cleveland as a priority FA signing, but has dealt with injuries and has not been great at anything.  Chris Chester has been inconsistent at times too.  Should backups like Josh LeRibeus and Spencer Long be getting more opportunities for playing time, or is the change at RT enough to keep the playoff hopes alive?

The biggest adjustment that almost everyone wants to see is Robert Griffin III returning to the starting lineup, but it looks like that will be at least one more week away.  What adjustments do you want to see the Redskins make?
