But if I had to focus on just one area it would be on improving the defense. Look at San Francisco and Seattle as the reason why. Both teams had young quarterbacks who endured their own growing pains at times this past season. Both survived because of their defense and a strong commitment to the run game.

Sure, why not? Is it likely, no, but every year there is some team that makes a big jump. The difference is, Kansas City hired a proven head coach and had a stronger talent base. But the Redskins are a year removed from a division title and have a good young offensive nucleus. Their defense needs more talent and Griffin must develop in order for the Redskins to make a big jump. The cap room is good, but they do have to be careful, because they not only have to re-sign some of their own players, they have to be mindful of how they structure their deals. They have some big contracts coming up in the next few years (Trent Williams; Griffin; Alfred Morris; Ryan Kerrigan). Plus, as we've seen every year, free agency is not always the answer.
