Say what you will about his size and lack of experience, but Aldrick Robinson showed again Saturday afternoon that he may be the best wide receiver next to Pierre Garcon that the Washington Redskins have.
Early in training camp, Robinson was praised by quarterback Robert Griffin III, when asked who Griffin thought was one guy who was really making an early impact. The impact Robinson made on the coaching staff Saturday however, may be the most important.
The third year speedster from SMU showed the all-around skills that can make him a dangerous weapon in the NFL, and a top target for Robert Griffin come the regular season. He was targeted five times and had four receptions for 61 yards(a 15.3 YPC average)with a long of 21 yards. He was the main cog in the Redskins passing attack that saw 11 different players catch passes from Rex Grossman and Pat White. He consistently was able to gain separation form defensive backs, and although he was stopped after a few catches, he showed glimpses of how dangerous he can be in the open field. The thought of what Robinson may be able to do with Griffin or Cousins throwing him the ball for an entire game is really exciting.
So far this preseason, in just over three quarters of play, Robinson has nine receptions for 112 yards. He had a would-be touchdown wiped out by a pass interference penalty last week against the Steelers. Even more encouraging, has been the confidence he's shown going over the middle of opposing defenses. Against man coverage or zone, Robinson has caught everything he's gotten his hands on.
The practice reports have been even more glowing as Aldrick has been repeatedly abusing any defensive back he's faced.
Garcon is our obvious number one. Anything beyond that should be open for competition. Moss has show consistancy from the slot, but he's going to be more situational this season. Hankerson has again shown flashes, but the drops have plagued him as well. Morgan continues to show great blocking ability and run-after-the-catch skills, but he's not a guy who can strike fear into the heart of a defense.
If Robinson can take his preseason success into the regular season this year, he may become the number two receiver this offense has been missing.
Hey Aldrick..........................take our breath away!
