Phillip Merling, 6’5", 315 lb
Clemson, Defensive End
6th season in the league, 1st year with the Redskins
Twitter handle: NA
Key Career Stats
68 Tackles, 3.5 Sacks, 8 Passes Defended, 1 Interception
2012 Stats: 2 Tackles
What is coming in 2013: The former 2nd round pick from the Miami Dolphins and Clemson standout will have to compete in order to make this squad. While he had impressive stat lines in college (99 Solo Tackles, 149 Total tackles, 12 Sacks, 3 Forced fumbles over 38 games in 3 seasons), that was a long time ago. An injury to Adam Carriker could keep Merling on the roster if he plays well during the preseason and training camp. Merling could have a lot of upside, but I think he is unlikely to make the team unless Carriker is hurt/cut and someone else goes on the injured reserve list. If he does make his way onto the roster, he will have a chance to make an impact on a defensive line that struggled in 2012.
