Knock on wood.
Now that we've got that taken care of, the Redskins are somehow entering the 2013 season with depth at Cornerback **gasp**. Many believe that Josh Wilson and DeAngelo Hall will retain their starting spots to start the season. In fact, over 50% of the readers of this article last week said Hall and Wilson will start Week 1. However, what we are speculating today is: Who will start in Week 17?
If it's going to happen, "injury" will be the said cause of Wilson or Hall's demotion. I say it that way because Wilson and Hall have been blessed with good health over their years here. Hall is only 1 of 3 active Cornerbacks in the NFL to start all 48 games in the last 3 years. Wilson, in his 2 years here, has never missed a start, which is not overtly impressive until you realize he is only 1 of 11 active Cornerbacks to do so. However, in our mind's eye we can replay images of Wilson and Hall coming up with stingers in their shoulders or arms after arm tackles. Remember Wilson's bulky elbow brace? With no one behind Hall and Wilson in the depth chart the last two years, the coaching staff was forced to trout out the duo week in and week out. Things are different this year.
With Hall and Wilson both entering the last year of the deals, the Redskins may elect to transition one or both of them out with the promotion of younger talent. The Redskins have free agent CB EJ Biggers who DB Coach Raheem Morris drafted while in Tampa Bay. Richard Crawford showed signs of potential in his rookie year playing in place of the suspended Cedric Griffin at the end of the year. The "Chase Minnifield Project" finally took the field in individual drills in the last day of OTA's. Finally, there's the top draft pick CB David Amerson.
Having this kind of potential riding the bench may make it easier for Shanahan to hold out Josh Wilson for a shoulder strain that he would have played with last year. That will open the door for a Richard Crawford or David Amerson to assume the starting position. Otherwise, the coaching staff could cater the Nickel CB spot to DeAngelo's strengths and have him pressure the QB like he did last year (Led all CBs in QB Hurries). The narrative would be already written, he's here "doing whatever the coaches want him to do." It's just reassuring to know that there is some potential waiting in the wings.
So, who do YOU think will be our starting Cornerbacks in Week 17?
