Jawan Jamison Is Wearing Chris Cooley's Number 47

Seventh-round draft pick Jawan Jamison was assigned fan-favorite Chris Cooley's number 47 at rookie minicamp.

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE

With rookie minicamp under way, the Redskins announced the jersey numbers that each draft pick would be wearing as they get accustomed to their new surroundings at Redskins Park. One number, in particular, stood out more than the rest.

Seventh-round pick Jawan Jamison will wear number 47, a number that has been donned by fan-favorite Chris Cooley since 2004. Cooley is not currently under contract with the team, and though the door hasn't officially been closed on the option of bringing him back, there isn't much evidence suggesting he has a spot with the team this year.

Cooley was released by the Redskins in 2012, and was brought back after starting tight end Fred Davis was lost for the season with a torn Achilles tendon. Should Cooley have a chance to compete to make the roster this year, he will have to battle Davis in addition to third-year tight end Logan Paulsen and rookie Jordan Reed, with the latter of whom possessing a similar skill-set to Cooley's.

There are no conclusions that can be drawn from a number divvied out in the springtime, especially considering numbers change all the time, and so much can happen between now and Week 1. But this is another storyline in mini-camp worth following, and with the mindset that Cooley's days in a Redskins uniform could be coming to a close.

Other Redskins jersey numbers announced: David Amerson: 39, Brandon Jenkins: 57, Bacarri Rambo: 29, Jordan Reed: 86, Phillip Thomas: 41, Chris Thompson: 35.
