Kory Lichtensteiger - Fallen Brave

New, comments

Kory Lichtensteiger has become a liability on the Redskins offensive line.

Patrick McDermott

Mike Shanahan is stubborn, and set in his ways; we all know this. But even Mike Shanahan had to be watching game film Sunday evening thinking to himself, "What the heck is he doing"!

The player at question here is veteran left guard Kory Lichtensteiger.

The 6'2" 284 pound(yes, you're reading this right)five year veteran has been a mere practice dummy for opposing teams defensive tackles and linebackers to hone their skills against this season. At 284 pounds, Lichtensteiger is the lightest starting guard in the NFL, and he may also be the worst at his respective position eight games into the 2013 season.

Lichtensteiger was originally selected by the Denver Broncos in the fourth round of the 2008 NFL draft by then head coach(you guessed it)Mike Shanahan. He was one of Mike Shanahan's first free agent signings when he was named head coach of the Redskins in 2010. Kory was given a new deal after his performance last season. The deal was for five years, and $17.5 million. His base salary of one million dollars this season escalates to a high of $3.5 million in 2015, before coming back down to $3.25 million in both 2016 and 2017. If this doesn't turn your stomach, I don't know what will.

For a player who has started 16 games just once in his career, this seems a bit outrageous. Add in the fact that he has already suffered a major knee injury while with the Redskins, and you have to wonder what the front office was thinking giving him a contract like they did.

Maybe winning the Ed Block Courage Award for how well he recovered from his injury was all the Redskins brass needed to see to reward him with the inflated contract. Could it be that Mike Shanahan had his film staff cut up Kory's 10 best plays as a professional, took it to Bruce Allen, and said(in the voice of Teddy KGB)"pay him, pay that man his money"!

Whatever the reason, Lichtensteiger's play this season hasn't even lived up to the $550k signing bonus he received, let alone the one million he's being paid as a base. If his play this season continues, and I see no reason it why it won't, dear old Bruce could have some egg to clean off his red face, and Shanny could be forced to swallow his pride, and cut his first free agent signing of his Redskins tenure.

Many may point to continuity amongst members of the Redskins 2013 offensive line as to why Lichtensteiger is still the starter. Others may point to the stubborness of our head coach. Some may even point to the contract as a reason why he's still out there with the first team. Whatever the reason, I think it's fair to say its a huge mistake.

I personally value continuity more than many on HogsHaven, but even I can no longer tolerate his horrible play. The man needs to be replaced, and NOW.

I am officially starting a movement, much like the Oneida Indian Nation, to get a change at left guard. The question is, who's coming with me!

Let's discuss the play of Kory Lichtensteiger, possible replacements, and when the plug should be pulled in the comment section. Tell us all how you REALLY feel!
