80 Years on the Warpath: A Look at the Uniforms

The Redskins have stuck with their current jerseys hailing from the days of Riggins. What's your favorite all-time Skins uniform?

In 1932 the Boston Braves were a new team in an eight team NFL. The NFL included five teams from those days that are still in existence, the Redskins, Bears, Packers, Cardinals, and Giants. The other three teams, the Portsmouth Spartans, Staten Island Stapletons, and Brooklyn Dodgers went to the wayside. The Braves went 4-4-2 in their inaugural season, finishing fourth in the league. The Boston team quickly changed their name to the Redskins in 1933 and remained in Boston until 1936. In 1937 the Washington Redskins and the Sammy Baugh era was born.

It seems as if the 80th anniversary version of the Redskins will be inspired by the Baugh days, as the Redskins released a look at their throwbacks this spring. The throwback is geared to be inspired by the unis the Skins sported from 1937-1951.

In 1952 we saw a little bit of a tweak when Eddie LeBaron introduced the gold pants to the fray. The gold pants also became a staple of the George Allen era in the 1970s, which has in turn inspired his son Bruce to bring back the gold pants to the Skins in more recent years.

Other jerseys that certainly stand out are from the Sam Huff era with a spear on the helmet. Sadly these awesome jerseys also reminds fans of the Spurrier years, sorry Sam. The other noticeable throwback was worn by the Redskins five years ago during the 75th anniversary and hailed the days of Vince Lombardi. Lombardi wished to make the jerseys resemble the Packers a bit more and introduced the yellow "R" helmet. These jersey make many remember the days of Sonny Jurgensen.

We constantly talk about how to change the Redskins jerseys, by I for one am glad we continually stay in touch with our heritage. So what's your favorite Skins jersey?
