Statistics: 2 Stats Redskins Must Improve On To Make Super Bowl Push

The Redskins are finally building a team the right way, but the lack of star power at multiple positions, especially the secondary, has me a bit nervous. But does it really matter? The Redskins finally have youth and competition at every position, but is the quality there to execute the game plans? I decided to pull up the regular season stats for the last four Super Bowl winners.

Key offensive stats are below and key defensive stats after the jump (via nfl.com). From what I gather, the Redskins don't need to have a top 5 defense or offense, they just need to do two, main things well, which all past four Super Bowl winners did:

  • Defense has to have 20 or more interceptions (only 13 last year)
  • Team must have a positive turnover ratio (-13 last year)

Shanahan addressed the second bullet trading the farm for Robert Griffin III. He's a smart, accurate QB that will surely protect the ball better than Grossman. But what about INTs? Brandon Meriweather had zero interceptions in 11 games with the Bears last year, and three in 2010 with the Patriots. Madieu Williams only has one INT in last three years. Tanard Jackson had two INTs in ten games with the Bucs last year....so, we need a miracle there. But we're only talking playoffs, not Super Bowl right? Right?

Defense..

Obviously, the QB Rating Allowed needs to come down. Forcing more interceptions will help immensely, but with two new safeties, the Redskins might regress in this category. It'll surely be the second most important thing to watch in camp excluding that RG guy.
