Robert Griffin did his thirteen millionth interview of the week with ESPN 1660 (Baylor country) and had some insightful answers on knowing the Redskins team and relating to the fan base. Special thanks to Daniel Shiferaw for tweeting the interview. The full audio is here.
On how much Redskins history he knows...
I know enough to know they haven't had a franchise guy in almost twenty years to most people's estimates. Dan Snyder's been on me about my Redskins history. I'll definitely have to look it up because you want to know where you're coming from. I'll be a Redskin and hopefully a Redskin for life. The most immediate thing that came to my mind was Doug Williams...Super Bowl champion. Only black QB to ever do that. Not that I have to carry a torch but I'd love to bring another Super Bowl to Washington.
Connection to DC with African Americans?
When you think about DC it's heavy populated with African Americans. They'll be able to assiocate with me. I've heard it a bunch on Twitter they want me to dread my hair so I look like the rest of them thereh in DC, but I'll probably keep my hair the way it is. But at least I can be the guy that not only the whole team believes in but the whole city can connect to.
Similarities from Baylor drought and DC?
Yea I definitely have. 16 year bowl drought. I told everyone. Baylor set me up for something even bigger. What I experienced at Baylor University being labeled a Savior, coming in, going through an injury and fighting thrtough a lot things set me up for what I'm going to have to deal with at the next level in D.C. bceause the fans are going to love us whether we're winning or losing but it's our job to bring victories. I'm excited about.
On if he's the same person and how's he stayed the same person.
It's in my mental makeup. My parents did a great job. I had success at an early age and had cameras in my face for a long time. Never give blanket answers. Just be open with people. And make sure to keep the people in your inner circle that will keep you grounded.
