Hey all, Pete Volk here. If you follow the Terps, you may know me from SB Nation DC and Testudo Times. I'll be helping out with some stuff over at Hogs Haven from here on out, including this new recurring segment, "Know Thy Frenemy". Happy to be here.
We're headed into Week 13, and with a big Monday night game against the division-leading Giants, here's how the Redskins' playoff picture stacks up with five regular season games left.
In the NFC East, the Giants are on top with a 7-4 record, with the Redskins and Cowboys right behind at 5-6 apiece. The Eagles, still apparently playing football, are in fourth at 3-8.
In terms of the Wild Card, the Packers and Seahawks are currently on top, with 7-4 and 6-5 records, respectively. Tied right behind are the Buccaneers and Vikings at 6-5, with the aforementioned 'Skins and Cowboys at 5-6.
The Redskins best chance may be at the division, and Monday's game is as close as you can get to a must-win at this point in the season. On the Sunday off, however, 'Skins fans have plenty of games to watch. Let's look them over, rating them on importance on a one (least) to five (most) scale.
1:00 E.T.:
Seahawks @ Bears
Who to Root For: Da Bears.
Why: At 8-3, the Bears are in good position in a competitive NFC North. The Seahawks are 6-5, one game ahead of the Redskins in the Wild Card race, and currently the last team going to the playoffs from the NFC.
Line: Bears - 3.
Importance Level: Three "Go Catch Your Dream"s.
Vikings @ Packers
Who to Root For: The Packers? I guess?
Why: Both of these teams are in direct playoff contention with the Redskins, so this is a tough one. The Packers currently hold the top Wild Card spot, while the Vikings are one game ahead of the 'Skins in pursuit of the second. Green Bay is two games ahead of Washington, so we'll root for them.
Line: Packers -8.
Importance: One Superman.
4:00 ET:
Buccaneers @ Broncos
Who to Root For: Broncos.
Why: They're in the AFC, so it really doesn't matter. Oh, and the Bucs are 6-5, right in front of the Redskins for a wild card sport.
Line: Broncos -7
Importance: Four Barneys.
8:20 ET:
Eagles @ Cowboys
Who to Root For: The Eagles.
Why: 1) They're not the Cowboys 2) The longer Andy Reid sticks around, the better 3) The Cowboys are tied with the Redskins in the division and Wild Card hunts at 5-6 4) They're not the Cowboys.
Line: Cowboys - 10.5
Importance: Five Elmos.
