Roster Battles: Cornerback

Cornerback is another position that is sure to be ripe with competition once training camp opens up (hopefully this week).  The Redskins are sure to add another cornerback to the mix via free agency with the probable departure of Carlos Rogers and Philip Buchanon, but lets have a look at what the corner situation looks like before free agency kicks up.  I think an important wild card to think about when examining the position battle at CB is recent draft pick Dejon Gomes, who is a safety but is fully capable of playing the nickle corner.

DeAngelo Hall (10): Coming off a Pro Bowl year DHall is guaranteed to hold down one side of the secondary for the 2011 campaign.

Kevin Barnes (8): Barnes finally got a shot to start some games last year, but at the safety position.  Barring the Skins signing two CBs via free agency Barnes should have the third CB spot locked up. If the Redskins do sign two FAs then Barnes could find himself in more of a dogfight to stay on the roster/

Byron Westbrook (4): Westbrook, who has stuck around with the team for a couple of years now, should have his work cut out for him to make the squad once again.

Brandyn Thompson (4): Westbrook's likely competition should be that of former Boise State CB Brandyn Thompson.  Thompson is certainly an interesting prospect who will vie for the final cornerback spot.
