Fresh batch of Kool Aid coming everyone's way! John Beck is doing something in DC that we have not seen in a very long time, acting like a true starting QB in the NFL. He's quickly become a team leader since Mike Shanahan praised him and rumors started to swirl about the "Stormin' Mormon" taking over the starting job. We're used to the QB carousel, Jason Campbell's bashfulness, and Donovan McNabb's playfulness while chillin in Arizona. But it really seems as if Beck is seizing the opportunity that the media has seemingly opened for him in the District.
If you were listening to Beck's interview on Sirius NFL Radio yesterday (yes, this was a real interview) then you were in for a treat:
"I don’t ask any fans to believe in me right now. How could I? If you try to see what I’ve done in my career, I’ve stood on the sidelines and watched people and I went out as a rookie and played like a rookie. That’s it.
"So, for me, just give me an opportunity in the games. When I get an opportunity to be in this offense for a year, now that I have an opportunity to study the offense, I just want the opportunity to play."
"I basically say, 'Screw the awkwardness'. I’m trying to be the starting quarterback. I’ll call whoever, try to set whatever up. If you don’t think you’re a starter and act like a starter, your teammates aren’t going to think you’re a starter."
Sounds like a guy who is hungry and seems more and more as the days go by that Rex Grossman will fade away from the picture. Beck also went on in the interview to say that he actually mad that they are missing out on OTAs and an opportunity for everyone to practice.
My favorite reaction from Adam Schein on Sirius:
@AdamSchein: holy cow. how about the swagger and attitude from john beck!?! that was tremendous. john freaking beck!!
Beck has also stepped up by giving offensive rookies copies of the playbook and training camp materials. He is also working out with Skins players, just yesterday he worked out with Leonard Hankerson.
I'm at the point now where I'm comfortable enough to say, "Screw It! Give the kid a shot!". This guy seems to have the work ethic and emotional aspects to be a starting QB in the NFL lets also hope he has the talent.
