Washington Redskins Top Ten Greatest Draft Successes: George Starke

For those that took issue with me naming Michael Westbrook as a Top Ten Draft Bust, have no fear--you will have the opportunity to vote him off the list at the end of this exercise which will occur early next week. I am just loading up the polls with candidates. For me, Westbrook belongs in the discussion, but I will be happy to let the people decide.

Perhaps an easier decision comes today, as I nominate George Starke to our list of Greatest Draft Successes. As an 11th round pick in the 1971 NFL Draft, Starke was known by many as "The Head Hog." Starke is probably the only guy we would feature on this list that failed to make the Redskins roster right away. In fact, he was cut by the Redskins and tried out for the Kansas City Chiefs and even the...Cowgirls. He failed to make any of those squads and came back to the Redskins a year later and made the team.

The rest is history of course. He was named to the 70 Greatest Redskins list and played in three Super Bowls. While he might not have stuck right away, I still consider the 11th round draft pick out of Columbia College to be a great success.
