Washington Redskins Top Ten Biggest Draft Busts: Tom Carter

I didn't want to have to do it. For some backwards reason, I actually liked Tom Carter. While I am not the biggest Notre Dame fan around, I did grow up watching them on TV each week. And when we announced that we had taken the golden domer with the 17th overall pick in the 1991 draft, I recall thinking we had gotten ourselves a real player.

The truth is Carter was not really even a standout player for Notre Dame. He benefitted from a strong combine performance. He played just well enough in college to keep the Redskins from triple-guessing his strong showing at the combine.

Tom Carter played for four seasons with the Redskins, pulling down 18 interceptions in that span. Carlos Rogers has only registered 8 interceptions in his time here. Will we see Carlos Rogers on this list? Perhaps. At least Rogers has stuck around in D.C., although the CBA shenanigans have probably played a part in that.

Carter finished out his career with 3-year stints each in Chicago and Cincinnati. I suppose what gets Carter on this list is that you expect a much more dominant player in the 1st round, and one that you would hope to hang on to for more than four years. For people who recall, the Redskins did not make a strong push to keep him in town after his four years.
