I’ve said this before in the past month or so, it has been eerily quiet out at Redskins Park this winter. Sure, a large amount of this is due to the looming lockout and non-existence of free agency, and thankfully Danny hasn’t bit on the few guys he can actually sign like Shaun Rogers, Bob Sanders, and OJ Atogwe. But my question is, why isn’t anyone being re-signed?
The only real contract news that we have heard the past couple of weeks is CP being let go and Moss’s contract being voided. Other teams are re-signing, franchising, transitioning, etc. but it’s been pretty stagnant in Ashburn. Currently here is the list of Redskins Free Agents:
Rex Grossman
Santana Moss
Stephon Heyer
Jammal Brown (99% sure he is)
Kedric Golston
Chris Wilson
Rocky McIntosh
Carlos Rogers
H.B. Blades (RFA)
Reed Doughty
The decisions made on some of these guys are going to be a clear roadmap for our future. But some of the lack of chatter baffles me. If we gave up assets to get Brown, then why hasn’t he been re-signed? If Moss wants to stay here and at a reasonable price (3yr/15mil) why hasn’t that been done? What is going to happen with the three FA linebackers? Doughty is a great depth guy also. It just seems like these deals could get done rather easily and you would not have to bring in the headache of free agency.
But the most baffling to me is Rex Grossman. I’m pretty sure people aren’t lining up to sign Rex, but isn’t it pretty clear he’ll be here one way or another next year? So why isn’t he locked up?
Also, if we let CP go, why not some of these are guys like Andre Carter? Does he really hold trade value for us, especially in a draft where we may not be able to trade players? He clearly doesn’t fit, so let the man choose where he wants to play. (Apparently Bruce Allen read this post)
I guess no news is good news, especially when it comes to Danny’s Front Office, but the lack of contract negotiations or even chatter is strange to me.
