In the event of the site's mock draft happening

Alright, so I thought about the pick of CB Aqib Talib for a while. There is no denying he is a good CB. However, the Redskins have Carlos Rogers, Shawn Springs, and Fred Smoot. We don't need a replacement for Springs, as we have Smoot for at least a few years (he's 28, in his prime). Burning a 1st rounder on a guy who would sit on the bench or be a nickel for at least a year or two doesn't make sense to me. I'd rather take a shot at a or DE in that case!

If Talib is our option, I say we either trade down or do something no one's talked about in a while. Ready?

Draft Kenny Phillips. Safety is quietly (arguably) a position of need and he wouldn't be a huge reach at 21. I realize that the naysayers will point out that we will have drafted 3 safeties in 4 years as our top pick, but unfortunately we have to judge the situation differently as Sean Taylor is tragically deceased. He is going to be a good safety, there's no doubt, and Reed Doughty is servicable, not elite. Rather than grab a guy who is guaranteed to be a backup for at least a year or two, and a role player at best for longer, let's get a guy who will start and make an impact immediately.

Or, as I said, trade down and grab a DE or a WR in the top of the 2nd and grab another mid-round pick for an OL or DE. I agree that Chris Wilson is a dangerous guy, but I really believe in the Giants' philosophy of rotating guys. Umenyoria and Tuck both started as situational pass-rush guys, and that's what Chris Wilson should be this year (as he was when he caught fire at the end of the year last year).

We absolutely need a WR in this draft as our corps is sickly. Anthony Mix has only a few more NFL receptions than I do, so I don't feel confident with him as a #3 considering that Campbell still needs a legitimate target to be effective. If we can't grab a WR at #1, we are wasting our time grabbing a CB there and should trade down or draft Kenny Phillips, a guy who will impact our defense right away.

Only in the way this mock
went did I think Talib was the best pick. Pass rush is more of a concern to me. You said we have Carlos Rogers, Shawn Springs, and Fred Smoot. Most offenses line up 3 WR's so a good secondary is a must. A nickel CB is a huge position with many teams rolling out 4 & 5 wide(Cowboys) We have to plan for the future and here's why:

Week 1 We will have (by top 3 depth order at CB) Springs, Smoot, Torrence. Springs is up there in age and played only one full healthy season with Washington. Smoot gets hurt a lot due to him being one of the most physical hitters at CB in the game. Torrence is supposed to be our 4th CB. If Springs or Smoot go down early in the season we'll be screwed. After this season Springs will be gone at CB, either moved to S or released b/c of his large salary. It would be great to have a CB of Talib's talent ready to take over. I think we can all agree that Rodgers has been less than spectacular..what if he doesn't pan out? That's another problem to consider.

I want a DE/pass rusher to but you can't draft in this league purely by position. The way these mocks are going I can see the 'Skins deciding to trade out for more picks due to many of the targeted prospects being gone at #21.

So you're going to draft...
A 4th Cornerback in the first round? So that we have someone to cover Sam Hurd besides Leigh Torrence? Why couldn't we draft a CB next year then, if that's when you argue Springs leaves, when we don't have absolutely pressing needs at WR? You say most offenses line up with 3 WR's, what about ours? Our need for a 3rd WR transcends our need for a 4th cornerback, especially when we have Springs and Smoot playing really well. You can't plan that one of them will get injured, that's why you have backups... That logic doesn't do it for me. We also have an arguably pressing need at S, as Phillips would be an upgrade over Doughty.

Since when is Carlos Rogers not panning out, by the way? He was very solid last year before his injury. He can't catch, sure, but he can ball on defense. He's a great tackler and solid in coverage.

I'm speaking purley
from a point of value and depending who's availible. I am NOT saying draft Talib or a CB no matter what. I was pointing out we need to reslove the situation or we are going to get exploted like we did in '06.
  1. pass rusher
  2. wr
  3. cb
  4. if none of those is availble trade for more picks
Phillips is a reach at #21 and Doughty held his own very well. Carlos Rodgers was on his way to having a good year before getting injured. I'd argue that Smoot is more reliable the Rodgers in coverage.

Name a pass rusher still on the board...
that is worth the #21 pick.  Groves?  Balmer?

And is the kid from Michigan State really worth the #21 pick?  Devin Thomas?  Really?  If not him, than what WR would you take at #21?

The mock went down in exactly the worst possible way for the team... which is to say that all the top players at positions of need (DE, WR) were gone.

SP took the best player on his board in Talib... even though he (SP) isn't very high on Talib.  There wasn't much in the way of alternatives in the way this mock worked out.

Now why couldn't Have I
written it like that!? That's exactly how I felt. I tried to make a diary on just that issue, should it come up for the skins.

Do you agree had Sweed not been picked by Philly, that he'd be the consensus pick by Hogs Haven?

He'd be considered...
but neither SP nor myself are really that high on him.

Let's just say I was glad when he was off the board so I didn't even have to consider the possibility.

if your talking about
the Super Bowl Nation Mock not allowing trades then yes I knew that. That's why I agreed with you that the "field" at our position in the draft was not desirable. If I misunderstood something which is a strong posibility let me know..

I forget but it was either
a) that this year trades were not permitted in the SB Nation draft or
b) based on my experience last year with a favorable pick and 3 days to wheel and deal yet being unable to make a trade work, it simply wasn't worth the time to even try to trade down.

I am always, ALWAYS a proponent of trading down. If I thought it was at all possible to get out of the 21st pick and into a more comfortable one down the line, I would've done so without hesitation.

Re: Sweed, I wasn't big on him but if you guys wanted him bad, and he were available, we would've definitely taken him.

If Not Sweed
I wouldn't know who the hell to pick (not counting Talib) All other big WR's were gone. Like TexSkins said this mock went the worst possible way for us.
