Skin Patrol's Question about the Draft

He brought it up earlier, and I thought I'd just get everyone's input.  The SBN's Mock Draft is fast approaching (as in less than a week folks) and the draft is less than a month away, so let's get it started.

What position do you feel needs to be addressed in the first few rounds?  The SBN version is going 2 rounds, so what are your top 2 picks by position.  I say by position because it will be very hard to predict who is on the board still at pick #51.

Anyway, hit up the poll, let us know what you think.  Also, comments are always encouraged.

Understand the question but
Ok,
I understand what you are saying about "what position" is needed but my opinion still falls to value not specifically one position.

If I'm picking my choice would be

  1. DE for Long, Vernon Gholston, Phillip Merling
  2. WR For Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly and James Hardy
  3. CB for Mike Jenkins or  Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
  4. OG for  Brandon Albert
One of them should be on the board at 21.
For the second round still need to look at overall value, removing the position which was selected at 21.

happends
to a fan(s) when they try to get to much info to fast because although this has been a good offseason in reguards to how we went about it...it's also boring as hell lol

I see what you're saying...
but its hard to put up a poll question that has all of the players who might or might not be available at the 21st pick.

So who do we think will be there at these positions of need?  Will Kelly and Sweed?  Will Gholston, Merling or Harvey (I omitted Long because he definately won't be there)?  What about Jenkins, Rogers-Cromartie, McKelvin or Talib?  I actually like Talib, SP does not, but I'm throwing him in the mix anyway.  Is there a DT worthy of the 21st pick?

So, the list:

WR - Kelly, Sweed, Hardy, Thomas
CB - any of the top 4
DE - Gholston, Merling, Harvey (who else?)
S - Kenny Phillips
OG - Brandon Albert
DT - ???

Who am I missing?

New need at WR
We absolutely need a WR in the 1st round now. I think Zorn and Co. definitely believe that we need a 1st round talent in our WR corps. By parting with Lloyd and Caldwell, clearly Zorn wants to inject some youth and talent into our unit.

If Malcom Kelly is still around, I think we should take him... and then probably Limas Sweed 2nd. Then I guess Devin Thomas, although I'm not that impressed with him. When did DeSean Jackson become a top-15 pick? And what happened to Manningham?

If we draft Sweed/Kelly and get a Calais Campbell or a tough passrushing DE in the 2nd round, the Redskins are a much, much better team. I know people on this website are high on Anthony Mix, but we absolutely need to add depth at WR. Now I'm wondering if we should draft another WR later in the draft because we have no one proven beyond ARE and SM (I don't trust James Thrash anymore). Add a first round WR talent to our offense (assuming he's not Rod Gardner.. yeesh) and we will be excellent. Our passrushing DE needs to come too, but we at least have some pieces in place because of the development of Wilson in addition to Carter who I personally feel is about to become a Pro Bowler.

As far as CB goes, we have a need there as well but we can afford to draft that later. If we burn a 1st rounder on a CB, we'll have a very crowded backfield where we have a much more pressing need at WR and DE.

So here goes ... and I don't claim to know depth beyond the first round, so I'll say what positions we should take and move on:

  1. Hopefully Malcolm Kelly, but WR
  2. DE (Hopefully Campbell but I doubt he'll be there)
  3. OL
(3 Compensatory pick if we get it) OL/CB
5) OL/CB if we didn't get compensatory pick, QB if we do

Rest of picks: (QB), FB, S, OL

I voted for a new head coach
Thought I was being funny, but I guess everyone is done with the fun and games with the Skins... It's time to get cerial.

Write in for DE.

OK...I DUNNO WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF
I coted CB.  I decided after review, that Chris Wilson is our answer at DE.  He's a little light at 250, but has only gotten better rushing the passer as time wore on.  he still has a measure of youth and is a cheap option.  CB needs help, and Springs is increasing in cost, and will inevitably decrease in value.  Plus, who knows what will really happen with Rogers?

So long as it isn't Talib!
I'm still down on him.

But if that's who you guys want, we'll go with him in the Mock Draft.

Full disclosure:
I went DE, but contingent upon who is available. I really don't think that at 21 the best-player-available strategy will matter as much as it would in the top 10 picks, since there's diminishing certainty on professional production the deeper you get in the draft.
