Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

According to the new mock....

on www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sub/mockdraft2.html and I like it. Ever since the offseason began, I've been against drafting a WR in the first rd. Further investigation has revealed that, at our current postion (21st pick overall) there's a good chance that there wont be a DE/DT woth that pick at that time.

IF we do pick a WR in the 1st, Malcolm Kelly (Oklahoma) would be my choice 'fo show! 6-3 224 & 4.55 40yd dash..be still my beating heart.

In the 2nd rd they have us getting DE Calais Campbell (The U). They call him a poor mans Mario Williams. He had a bad senior season and worse combine, but still think he's got lots of potential. I think we have the type of locker room that could help him.

Discuss..or don't but if I don't get some football news i'm gonna freak out

I didn't think
Calais Campbell would be available in the 2nd, but I guess his combine really blew it for him.

I didn't watch a lot of Miami football but can his poor senior season be attached to the general decline of that team recently?

I wouldn't
think so. Only skill postions are looked at when the win/loss is an issue. His preformance was lackluster (self admittedly I don't watch the U)this past season, and his combine/ pro day were severely biffed. I think he will defantly fall to the 2nd rd. I'm also have a big man crush on Trevor Laws DT Norte Dame.

There is
more depth at the DE position than WR-first round talent may go to WR, but overall depth goes to DE.  I championed drafting a WR in the first for a little while, and the more I thought, the less I liked it.  WR's just have to high of a bust percentage...and the (reasonably talented) bigger guys are all in the middle rounds, save a couple.  4.55 is Relatively slow at WR (though just about decent for a guy his size), but if he runs crisp routes, that caveat will be negated due to the nature of the WC offense.  We'll see...I do trust we will have a very good draft.

I was fine
with Joe Gibbs draft history here in town except for the shortness in picks. I thought that when we did pull the trigger, we were as successful as could reasonably be expected.

So is this draft Vinny's? Is he accountable?

If Calais slips past the 1st
He is good enough to pull a rocky mac and move up to get him. I too think we should go with a WR in the first round, and if Malcolm Kelly is still there, we have to snag him. I'll pass on Manningham, and I'll take Limas Sweed I suppose, but if Kelly is still there, we gotta grab him and then consider maybe making a move for a DE in the 2nd round. We need a speedy passrusher no matter in what round. That's a priority. But a top-flight WR would be sick to snag in the 1st round... and he won't have the boom-bust risk because we already have a #1 receiver in Moss, and a great TE and running game. He only has to be a #2 receiver, and can survive as a #3 for the beginning of the season.

Little Moss
Is not a number one WR...1.5, maybe.

agreed
Moss is no number 1 WR. Let's not forget the plays he was taking off, and sitting himself on the bench. We need a WR with some size. The '05 season was great but teams have greatly limited his production.

I think he can be.
His 2005 production was #1 WR stuff. Obviously he's been unable to replicate since then, but I think he's capable of being as competitive a receiver as this league has.

If Jim Zorn can get 1200 yards out of Santana Moss, he'll have my support.

Under Gregg Williams
we always drafted a defensive player first. I wonder how much of that was Gregg being assertive or whether Joe (or whomever) thought it best to go in that direction. Or perhaps it's something as innocuous as the best available player annually happened to be a defensive player.

Who knows, but it's been a minute since we went offense 1st.
