Good choice?
Is he a good player? Yes.
Is he a distraction? Yes.
Is he going to be worth the price (a 1st and 3rd round pick, two 2nd round picks, etc.) seeing as he is already past the prime (he is nearing, if not already, 30) of his career? Well, that is the question... I'd say no. Others here on the site say yes.
Check out some of our other threads (here for starters) and welcome home.
Great choice...
Someone correct me if I'm wrong..
I know there are some ways around this (certain periods when players get cut because the cap hit can be spread out over 2 years), but with a contract like 85's, it will be tough.
I'm not a capologist. Don't pretend to be. Someone who deals with numbers better than I do chime in with the proper answer.
Oh, and there is no way you can say that Ocho Cinco isn't a distraction. He might be funny and charming and a great teammate and a hard worker... but when you have to answer more questions in the locker room because of what another player did (TD celebration, comments, etc.) that is a distraction.
I make the distinction between distraction and negative distraction. For most of his career, 85 has been the former, but as of late, he's been the latter.
Contract numbers...at the bottom
In 2006 Johnson's signing bonus of 5.5 Million is spaced out over 5 years or 1.1 Million per year. With 3 years left 2008-2011 the Bengals would take a hit for 3.5 million.
Continuing to look at the contract another 5 million in bonuses are paid for 2007. 4 years at 1.25, and again with 3 years left (2008,2009,2010) another 3.75 hit to bengals for this year.
Total hit to Bengals cap this year if Johnson is traded 3.5 + 3.75 = 7.25 (Best guess)
After June 1st if a player is cut this allows the bonuses and salary to be spread over the next 2 years, Don't know if a player traded after this date it follows those same rules or not.
Contract from ESPN:
Johnson will receive a $5 million signing bonus, a $250,000 reporting bonus, a $250,000 workout bonus and a base salary of $2.75 million for 2006. In 2007, he is due a $3.5 million option bonus, a reporting bonus of $1.5 million, a $250,000 workout bonus and a $2.5 million base salary.
The base salaries for the balance of the deal are as follows: $3 million (for 2008), $4.5 million (2009), $5 million (2010) and $6 million (2011).
He'll want and receive

Agent led talk, has no walk
Marvin Lewis said: "No. 1, the guy has a contract through 2011, OK. No one within the Bengals organization has ever spoken of or ever uttered anything about trading Chad Johnson, nor will he be traded. There is no such thing as behind-the-door dealings in the NFL. That does not occur because the team in question (the Bengals) is not willing to trade their player nor have they thought about trading their player or discussed trading their player, or will they discuss trading their player. So I think that's pretty clear. Things can move on."
