Out with the Al, in with the Zorn.

[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Bumped from diaries because ThePosse is on top of things. The word from the espn article below: Jim Zorn has accepted an offer to become offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, sources said. Zorn, 54, has coached quarterbacks for the Seattle Seahawks since 2001. He was previously quarterbacks coach for Detroit from 1998 to 2000. Zorn's hiring comes as the Redskins continue their search for a head coach. This is unfortunate for Coach Al Saunders, who has apparently been replaced. More, later. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3214785

In what I guess is a strange turn of events (JLC at RI reported yesterday that Zorn wasn't leaving Seattle http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2008/01/what_now.html ) Jim Zorn will replace Saunders as OC.

Not sure how I feel about this...yet.  I guess it's a good thing that on January 25th we finally officially have an OC that can start working with JC, but damn...the poor kid's gotta be having nightmares now about another friggin system to learn. And the "West Coast" system taboot. Ugh.

And who the hell is making these decisions?  Do Danny and his minion already have a HC in place but aren't talking?  Is it Fassel but he's waiting to make the announcement until the fan uproar (well done people) subsides a bit?   How can they hire a coordinator before hiring a HC??

Aaahhhhh THIS TEAM!!!!

ugh...
Well, that ruins my evening...just when I thought my wife would handle that.  I love the Englishman.  But he will get hired somewhere...ATL would be most logical.  ATL has a defensive HC...and I haven't heard about an OC.  So Al may get to do his (awesome) thing...and he will laugh at the skins as his top-five offense outscores ours by 100 points on the season.

And calm down, people, Jim Fassel can make/keep this team contending.  And he has a MUCH stronger track record than GW...

My concern, is although Zorn will bring what is likely to be a simplified offense, who is supposed to be at reciever on 4 & 5 wide?  I have a very cost-effective list:

  1. Randle El (he is expensive overall, but well worth it due to his versatility...though he could become expendable)
  2. Reche Caldwell
  3. Anthony Mix (we need a big boy to run over the middle)
  4. James Thrash (he knows how to step up)
  5. Captain Chaos.  (That's Chris Cooley for the idiot-boy living in dallas who doesn't know the name)
Waiting in the wings:  Mike Espy...or our round 1 choice.

(Gasp)  where's Moss?  Traded to ATL for a third rounder and salary cap hit compensation...though we could trade him to the Jags for one of their big boys.

Awww we have
a head coach...name's Jim Fassel.  thought I heard he could snuff the offer if officially extended...I'd find that rather amusing, really.

Does anyone else feel like
were the two guys in the stands watching Bobby Boucher play foosball and arguing about Joe montanya playing linebacker?

So I take it...
no one is viewing this like Dallas hiring Garrett before hiring a head coach last year?

Well,
I was reading down the list and saw that Al was given a shot to talk to the Rams...could be a good fit for him-does Linehan still have the HC job?  he's known as being rather conservative.  But Steven Jackson has great hands for a RB (especially his size) so it could be the best Job Al has had in 2 years...

anyways, I'd hate to think of a smear campaign, but Snyder is a business man before he's a human being, and gumption can come and go as it pleases.  I know there is tremendous support for GW-but that may be irrelevant now.  Meeks knows how to use small, young (undervalued, therefore cheap) guys to put together a top-notch defense, and I pray that's what we'll have.  We can be 10 mil under the cap for a change with the right personnel in place, and still be successful.

I read that Zorn can be quite creative, not to say he's the uber guru Saunders was-but there's hope of a few trick plays...let have Randle El throw a couple a game, eh?

Oh well.  guys, you might as well stop emotionally investing in the team (at least for the next month) as you can surely tell, it's not worth the cost of blood pressure meds.
